1.Let’s say it’s your job to look into cougar sightings. A person tells you that he saw a cougar. You want to find out if he really did. What will you ask this person? What will he say?

Use ideas from the news story in your writing. Use your own ideas, too.

My Answer:I would actully ask that person where they say the cougar in that case some of them dont live in some places like over in hawaii, and what color are they?Like it said, the big cats once lived throughout most of North and South America maybe they saw one in places that are north and south?I would ask them.

Think about what the scientists learned using Rocky. Plan a different study. Use a different robot animal. Write about:

  • What animal you will study
  • The things your robot animal will do
  • What you want to learn
  • How you will know if the study worked

Use ideas from the news story to help you. Use your own ideas, too.

My Answer:I would like to study monkeys!
I can make my robot communicate and find out what monkeys like to do
I want to learn alot about them!
My monkey robot will show other monkeys the right behavior, but still make them cool animals!Just like the squirrel robots,i would also like to record monkeys communacating!

Write a summary of today’s article. As you write your summary, do the following:

  • STEP 1: First you must read the article carefully.
  • STEP 2: Look back at the article. Then:
    1. Pull out the topic sentences for each paragraph.
    2. Get rid of any details that are not needed.
    3. Put the information into a single paragraph.
  • STEP 3: Rethink your summary.
  • STEP 4: Check and double-check.

My answer:The Obama’s have a new dog called Bo.They think that Bo should be trained in a routine so that it doesn’t get fearful because if it does, its not vey good for Bo.They would also like Bo,to have lots of excersise so it prevents like nipping and biting. They would want Bo to bond with the family so they should take walks and do activites with Bo,Bo should meet many people. They have a fear that people might get mixed up with Bo,with no.Bo’s health is very important too! They wan to protect him from infectious diseases. To make sure he wont get sick Bo receives regular health care.

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas (Achieve3000, May 21, 2009). Myron Means loaded a dart into an air rifle. He then took aim at a mother bear and pulled the trigger. Slowly, the medicine inside the dart took effect. The bear drifted off to sleep. Means is a bear biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). He and his team placed a radio collar around the bear’s neck. They put tags in her ears. Means also removed one of the mother bear’s teeth. This was done to find out her age. The purpose of this program is to keep track of black bears. This helps the AGFC see how the bears are doing. It’s a necessary part of making sure the bears’ future is brighter than their past.

Such examinations are performed all through the winter. They take place at dens across the Ouachita and Ozark mountains of Arkansas. Less than 100 years ago, black bears in this area were almost completely wiped out. The black bear population has since grown, however. That’s thanks to an experimental program. The program was started by the AGFC in the 1950s.

The problems for black bears in Arkansas began in the 1800s. Tales of the area’s wilderness captured the imagination of many outdoorsmen. It was said to be filled with black bears and deer.

“There was this [air of mystery] about the big, black bears that lived in Arkansas,” said Kimberly Smith. Smith used to work for the AGFC. He is now a professor at the University of Arkansas.

By 1861, Arkansas’ was known for having thousands of black bears. People began calling Arkansas “the Bear State.” The railroad tracks that arrived in the state by the mid-1800s brought hunters. They had no reason to be worried about the number of bears they killed.

This widespread hunting, coupled with the cutting down of forests, destroyed the state’s bear population. By 1928, only 25 bears remained in Arkansas. So bear hunting was no longer allowed. This did not help, however. Heading into the 1950s, the black bear population had grown to only 50.

In 1958, the AGFC tried a different approach to the problem. It started an experimental program. As part of the program, the AGFC agreed to trade Arkansas bass and wild turkeys for bears from Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada. However, they had to catch the bears themselves.

Traps were soon set. They were baited with fish, fruit, and even bacon grease. Once bears were trapped, AGFC workers drove the animals back to Arkansas. There, the bears were let go in the wild.

“It actually worked out really well,” said Kimberly Smith.

No one outside the AGFC knew about the program. Some area newspapers in Minnesota wrote about the bear captures. People living in Arkansas, however, were kept in the dark. They were not informed of the successful program until it had been completed.

“It was done totally in secret,” Smith said. Would-be hunters in Arkansas had no idea there were any bears to hunt.

Under that cover, the state’s bear population grew. In 1973, as many as 700 bears roamed the state’s mountains. By that time, the AGFC had ended its restocking efforts. Still, the number of bears continued to multiply.

“The habitat was good, and the size of the area was really big,” said Joe Clark. Clark is an ecologist. “Bears could afford to roam after they were reintroduced.”

Today, more than 4,000 black bears roam the state. The population has recovered to the point that hunting again takes place in the Bear State. This time, though, it is strictly regulated.
